The Tacoma Titans took the field on opening day right here in Tacoma against the Death Valley Assassins. While it was a bit chilly at 36 degrees with the wind blowing out to right field at 13mph, clear sky's prevailed. Dug Riddler, owner of the Titans had this to say before the game, "It's like we just started the league all over. It's very exciting."
It didn't take the Titans long to get going. Dwight Miller, 1B, lead the 2nd inning off with a single, followed by a single by Javier Barron which moved Miller to 3rd. Augustin Saltzman then hit a deep fly ball to left-center field that scored Miller on a sacrifice fly to give Tacoma a 1-0 lead. Ralph Mathias, CF, then hit a 2 out 2-run blast off the foul pole in right field to stake Tacoma to a 3-0 lead. The Assassins then rallied to take a 4-3 lead off Salvador Acuna and then tied the game 5-5 in the top of the 7th. In the bottom of the 7th Jerry Curtis, pinch hitting for Ivan Valverde, opened up the inning with a double and then scored on an error by third baseman Bill Marshall. Chris Gibson pitched a scoreless 9th inning to secure the win for Acuna (1-0). Bill Marshall was the hero (and villain you might say) for the Assassins going 3-4 with 3 RBI's coming up a double short of the cycle.
The next game on the schedule is tomorrow evening at 7:05 local time and pits Gabriel Galvan against Daryl Wyman.
