2020 Amateur Draft Recap

Post by KMcBride on January 14th 2013, 12:44 pm

Portland Press Herald
June 16, 2020

First-year General Manager Keith McBride and first-year Scouting Director Marshall Baughman completed their first draft yesterday. While both seemed happy with the overall outcome, it is clear from comments that the two did not see eye-to-eye.

Baughman had expressed some frustrations in the media after Round 1, where McBride ignored his projections and selected pitcher Alfonso Marroquin, who was not at the top of Baughman's draft list. McBride said that he wanted a more "proven" commodity with his first round pick.

"He (Baughman) wanted us to take more risks, seeing some great potential in a few unproven players," said McBride. When asked if he disagreed with Baughman, McBride responded, "not with his assessment of talent, but we didn't agree on draft strategy."

Baughman apparently felt slighted. "If I say a guy is the best pick, then he should be picked first," he stated. "We're lucky that some of those guys were still available later on, or we would have missed out on some potential super-stars."

McBride added fuel to the rumors that he and his Scouting Director were not getting along, addressing Baughman's comments by telling reporters, "It wasn't luck. It was strategy. That's what I do. Execute strategy."

Rumors continue to persist that Baughman's job could depend on the success of some of the relative unknown prospects selected by Maine early in the draft.

2020 DRAFT RE-CAP:

Round 1:
Alfonso Marroquin LH SP Florida State University
Age: 22 From: New River, AZ
As a Freshman in 2017, was called on to pitch in the College World Series, started 4 games giving up 3 runs in 30 innings, helping FSU win the National Championship ... Power-pitcher who gets to 100 mph on his fastball, and averaged over 13 Ks per 9 innings in 2020 ... Will begin his professional career in single-A Houlton.

Round 2:
Joe Lazenby LH SP University of Ottawa
Age: 22 From: Toronto, ON
According to Scouting Dir. Baughman, was the top pitcher available in the draft ... Pitched one year for Ottawa, putting up decent numbers ... Needs to work on developing some pitches, but may have the tools and drive to be a major-league starter ... He's probably a hell of a guy, but it remains to be seen if he can be a professional baseball player.

Round 3:
Thad Barton C Louisiana State University
Age: 22 B:R T:R From: Perkasie, PA
Represented the Eastern Conference in the 2020 NCAA All-Star Game ... Tremendous work ethic will help him develop both the defensive and offensive tools he needs to contribute to the major league club ... Will start his professional career in single-A Houlton.

Round 3:
Len Cromsie LF Bishop's University
Age: 22 B:S T:R From: Coquitlan, BC
Taken with the pick Maine received in the trade with Charming for LF Dan Hull and 3B Javier Fernandez earlier this year ... Outstanding defensive outfielder with great range and speed ... With work, could be an excellent CF as well as corner outfield positions ... Needs to develop his hitting skills, but survived in college by being patient and drawing walks.

Round 4:
Nobusuke Tsuchiya RF
Age: 16 B:L T:L From: Kamiiso, Hokkaido (Japan)
Young. Really, really freaking young ... Great tools and coachability ... Shows excellent patience and discipline at the plate .. Defensively inadequate in every way, and lacks speed ... Will need years to develop, and hopefully will be worth the time invested.

Round 5:
Jesus Martinez RF
Age: 17 B:R T:L From: Zacualtipan, Hidalgo (Mexico)
Rated as the #1 outfielder in the draft by Scout Baughman ... Is a complete unknown, as he has no record of statistics from any organized baseball league ... Will be closely coached and scouted in his first year ... Good speed on the basepaths.

Other notable selections:
Round 8:
Jesse Lovelass SS Acadia University
Age: 22 B:R T:R From: Chatham-Kent, ON
Inexplicably fell to Round 8 in the draft ... Outstanding defensive infielder who can play 2B, SS or 3B ... Blazing speed and excellent baserunning instincts ... Rarely strikes out, & takes a lot of BBs ... Poor power, but an excellent lead-off option.

Round 12:
Wesley Mills LH SP University of North Carolina
Age: 22 From: West Haverstraw, NY
Split time in 2020 between starting rotation and closer for the Tar Heels ... Had a 1.30 ERA after 55.1 innings in 2020 ... Needs to develop his fastball; velocity rarely touches 90 mph ... Despite lack of velocity, has had success getting hitters to swing and miss by changing speeds and using movement ... Averaged 11.71 Ks per 9 innings this year.

Round 24:
Leon Ortiz C Princeton College
Age: 22 B:S T:R From: Queretaro, Queretaro (Mexico)
24th round selection, taken for good defensive skills ... With some improvement offensively, could be a nice surprise ... Needs to cut down on strikeouts; K in 156 of 505 ABs in college (31 percent) ... Could also play 1B, if needed.

I think you got LovelASS because I removed him from my list thinking he had already been drafted...awesome...

I should do a write-up regarding my draft...this draft will be very interesting. I imagine we will have a lot of 1st round picks that crash and burn and several picks beyond round 5 that turn into productive NABL players. You should track it for the rest of our enjoyment! I could have sent Rich a list of 1 person for both the 4th and 5th round selections...amazing...

I thew his name around a little too- my scout didn't like him. I think he might of called him a career minor leaguer. I liked him but I guess i had him a little too far down Smile Bump the relievers over him since my scout thought they would be solid relievers. But I was struggling on putting them ahead of a position player...

Good idea!

Here's what's happened to these players I identified in my original article on the 2020 Draft:

SP Alfonso Marroquin
1st Round pick (16th Overall)
Currently:   SP, Maine Shipwrights
Made his ML debut in 2023, and has started 157 games for Maine ....  Selected to the 2026 and 2027 BE all-star teams ... In 2024, had a 21-6 record with a 3.80 ERA ...  Career WHIP:  1.34

SP Joe Lazenby
2nd Round Pick
Currently:  SP, Reno Aces (LVB AAA)
Taken in the 2025 Rule 5 Draft by Las Vegas ... Started 30 games for Las Vegas in 2026, going 9-11 with a 6.29 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP ... Has gone between AAA and AA this season, but is currently on the DL with a torn labrum and is done for the year ...  I'm still sure he's a hell of a guy, but definitely was NOT the best pitcher available in the draft, despite what my crackpot scouting director suggested at the time.

LF Len Cromsie
3rd Round Pick (64th Overall)
Currently:  LF, Maine Shipwrights
Major League Debut in 2024 ...  Career .286 hitter, despite a down year in 2027 ... Hit .429 with a 1.169 OPS in the  2026 post-season.

C Thad Barton
3rd Round Pick (66th Overall)
Currently:  C, Smoke Bay Islanders (MS AAA)
Taken in the 2023 Rule 5 Draft by Mississauga ... Hit .234 with a .673 OPS in 2024 for Mississauga ... Has split time between A, AA, and AAA in 2026 and 2027.

RF Nobusuke Tsuchiya
4th Round Pick
Currently:  RF, Missoula Xplorers
Traded to Missoula in 2023 in a deal that brought SP Augusto Valdes to Maine .... Valdes has been a let-down, and I probably never should have made this deal, hindsight being 20/20 ...  Dealt with some injuries in 2027, but has hit .292 with 22 HR and a .909 OPS.

RF Jesus Martinez
5th Round Pick
Currently:  RF/DH,  Downeast Beacons (MSW AAA)
Has developed power and defensively, but has never played at the ML level, and likely won't ...  Clearly not the best OF in the draft, as my scouting director was obviously tripping on mushrooms at the time ... 2027 season ended after 6 games when he broke his elbow in mid-April ...  Hit 37 HR in AAA in 2026, but also struck out 171 times ... Career AAA batting average: .233.

SS Jesse Lovelass
8th Round Pick
Currently:  Retired
STILL don't understand how Lovelass was available in round 8 ...  Played 194 games for Maine from 2022-2024 and was released to Free Agency instead of arbitration after the 2024 season ... Finished with a career AVG of .285 ... Stole 33 bases in 2023.

SP Wesley Mills (12th Round) could never adapt to a starting pitching role, and didn't have the velocity or "stuff" to make it as a closer/reliever and left as a minor league FA after the 2026 season.  He is still a free agent, and thinks he can throw a baseball clear over those mountains, and could have helped State win "the big game."

C Leon Ortiz (24th Round) couldn't quite put it together offensively and never rose above AA.  He was released in the 2025 season, and retired from baseball after that season.  He currently sells knick-knacks in a Peoria, IL gift shop, and enjoys soft-core pornography.

HOWEVER, the two biggest surprises from this draft were:

MR Adrian Rosas
7th Round Pick
Currently:  MR, Maine Shipwrights
Came to the ML level in 2022, and has appeared in 341 games for Maine as closer or MR ... Is enjoying the start of a (potentially) Hall of Fame career as a reliever ... Career ERA: 3.68; WHIP: 1.22; HLD: 98.

RF Shing Ang
13th Round Pick
Currently:  RF, Maine Shipwrights
Made his ML debut in 2022 and has appeared in 737 games for Maine ... Won the BE Silver Slugger Award in 2025, when he led the League in RBI (132), R (133), SLG (.587), EBH ( 82) and TB (382) ... Career AVG: .292 ... Played like total and absolute shit in 2027, but I'm sure he's going to turn it around again next year.
