"Worst Case Scenario" for Shipwright's Season Openers

Post by KMcBride on December 18th 2012, 12:42 pm

Portland Press Herald
April 4, 2020

The Shipwright's season-opening series ended last night, with the New York Lebowskis completing the series sweep by a score of 11-2. In game one, SP Gianni Potier, Maine's first round pick (7th overall) in the talent dispersal draft, opened the team's 2020 season by straining muscles in his arm and leaving the game in the first inning, after just 26 pitches. He will miss five weeks. Last night, in game three, 3B Otis Brown followed suit by leaving the game in the 7th inning with an elbow injury.

"Any time you put a lot of new faces together, you can never tell how long it will take for them to become a team. So, we're okay with dropping a few games," said GM Keith McBride after last night's loss. "But to lose your ace starter and third baseman to injuries in the process, and to be swept -- that's worst case scenario, right there. Potier's injury, especially, was a real FML moment for me."

The team announced today that X-rays on Brown's elbow were negative, and that his injury would not keep him out of the line-up for any extended time, but the team also announced that it would be putting Potier on the DL. "It's a long season," Potier said. "I'll be back."

The team's bright spots over the first three games were 2B Mark Hopewell (.308 with 3 doubles), OF Jason Canning (.455) and a sharp pitching performance from Raul Avila in a losing effort in game 2 of the series.

The team looks to get their season back on track with a series in Key West beginning tonight. Maine will send 38 year-old pitcher Stu Weston to the mound for his first major league start since 2018. "He had an excellent spring," said McBride. "And we need his veteran leadership right now."

McBride also acknowledged that someone would have to come up from AAA to take Potier's place in the rotation, but had not yet decided on who would be called. "There's more than a few guys who deserve to be pitching in a major-league rotation, but I don't know who it will be right now."

After the team's series in Key West, they return to Maine for their home opener on April 7 against Montreal.
