Detroit Mustangs 2020 Preview

Post by Det42 on December 16th 2012, 11:47 am

With the craziness of the league reorganization behind us and the ending of spring training, baseball is ready to start up again in the NBL. Here we have the Opening Day roster for the 2020 Detroit Mustangs:

Pitching Rotation:

RHP Bernard Brett

RHP Marc Laurent

RHP Mark Wyatt

RHP Tore Bjorklund

LHP Will Bishop

Brett was Detroit’s #1 pick in the inaugural draft this past off-season, so a lot of pressure is being put on him to perform. After speaking to him, he says that he’s confident he can match or surpass the 15-7 record he put up with Asheville last season. He’s going to need to, because the rest of the starting rotation appears to be fairly weak. Laurent and Wyatt have little to no big league experience, and Bjorklund had a horrible spring, posting a 10.50 ERA. “Look, I know I’m lucky to be here,” Bjorklund said. “I’m sure the only reason I didn’t get sent over to Windsor is because George (Stalker) had an even worse spring than I did. I just need to perform better to show I deserve this chance.” For comparison, George Stalker’s ERA this spring was 11.37 and opponents were hitting .431 against him. The biggest surprise of all is the inclusion of Will Bishop, who just a couple of weeks ago was the subject of some negative comments from team scout Fred Evans. When asked for comments, Bishop only said, “I’m happy to have made the big club, and I have no hard feelings toward Fred.”

Bullpen:

RHP John Brenton

RHP Pedro Martinez

RHP Adrian Blanche

LHP Palmiro Borlido

RHP Scott Charles

RHP Bob Marleau

The bullpen is heavy in right-handed closers, but all of these pitchers had decent to great springs. The biggest question marks are in their abilities to get left-handed batters out and who is going to close games. Currently that assignment is going to Blanche, who had 34 saves with Chicago last year.

Lineup vs. RHP:

SS Devin Newman

3B Ivan Mireles

CF Wilber Millar

1B Colin McLeod

DH Wes Lovell

LF Jerry Krause

RF Josh Boyd

2B Jose Arranas

C Jean-Marie Gaillard

Lineup vs. LHP:

2B Devin Newman

3B Ivan Mireles

CF Wilber Millar

1B Colin McLeod

LF Jerry Krause

DH David Fields

SS Jose Arranas

C Dave Young

RF Phil Smith

Bench:

1B Mal MItchell

RF Guy Gerard

The starting lineup looks fairly strong at the top. Newman is a 3-time All-Star, McLeod is a power hitter who can also hit for average, Krause is a huge pain for pitchers, and both Mireles and Millar are looking to have good years. The bottom is a little more troublesome, but shouldn’t be enough trouble to cause problems if the big bats are on their game. If those big bats are off, however, it could be a long season.

With all of the upheaval in the league, it’s hard to predict success or failure. All of the teams are in an equal state of flux. From the looks of this roster, it would seem plausible to compete for at least second place in the division, with a wildcard berth an outside possibility.
